Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 5 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries, finely crushed
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup Golden Oreos, crushed
  • 1/4 cup strawberry cake mix

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cereal: Place the Rice Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside. This ensures you have an ample container for mixing the coated cereal later.
  2. Melt the White Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine white chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth, avoiding any overheating.
  3. Coat the Cereal: Pour the melted white chocolate over the cereal. Gently stir with a spatula to coat every piece thoroughly without breaking the cereal.
  4. Prepare the Coating Mix: In a gallon-sized Ziploc bag, combine the powdered sugar, strawberry cake mix, crushed freeze-dried strawberries, and crushed Golden Oreos. Mix these dry ingredients well to ensure an even pink coating.
  5. Combine Cereal and Coating: Transfer the white chocolate coated cereal into the Ziploc bag with the dry mixture. Seal the bag securely and shake vigorously until all cereal pieces are evenly coated and have a lovely pink hue.
  6. Set and Serve: Pour the coated puppy chow onto a baking sheet to spread out and let it cool and set for about 15 minutes. Once set, serve immediately or store in an airtight container to maintain freshness.

Notes

  • For best results, use freeze-dried strawberries as they provide intense flavor without adding moisture.
  • If you don’t have coconut oil, you can substitute it with unsalted butter for a slightly different texture and flavor.
  • Store leftover puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
  • This recipe is vegetarian but contains dairy and gluten (from Oreos and cake mix), so it’s not suitable for vegan or gluten-free diets.
  • Shake the bag gently at first to avoid breaking the cereal, then shake more vigorously once coated.
