4.6 from 54 reviews

Creamy and flavorful Garlic Mashed Potatoes made with tender Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, infused with sautéed garlic butter and smooth milk, perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet)

Garlic Butter Mixture

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup butter

Other Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Potatoes: Peel the potatoes and cut them into even-sized chunks to ensure even cooking. Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold, salted water.
  2. Cook Potatoes: Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook the potatoes until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Test for doneness by piercing with a fork; they should be soft and easily break apart.
  3. Make Garlic Butter: While the potatoes cook, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
  4. Mash Potatoes: Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Pour the garlic butter mixture and milk over the potatoes. Use a potato masher or fork to mash the potatoes until they reach a smooth and creamy consistency.
  5. Season: Add salt and pepper to taste, mixing thoroughly to incorporate the seasoning evenly throughout the mashed potatoes.
  6. Serve: Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped parsley if desired. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for a creamier texture or Russet potatoes for fluffier mashed potatoes.
  • For richer mashed potatoes, substitute milk with cream or add sour cream.
  • Be careful not to overcook the garlic to avoid bitterness; sauté just until fragrant.
  • To keep mashed potatoes warm, cover the bowl with foil or a lid and place over a warm water bath.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days and reheated gently with additional milk as needed.
