Steak Marinade
- 1.5 lbs flank steak or skirt steak
- 1/4 cup lime juice
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Fries
- 2 lbs russet potatoes
- Vegetable oil (for tossing and baking fries)
Toppings
- 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup pico de gallo
- 1/4 cup guacamole
- Sour cream (optional, for serving)
- Marinate the steak: In a bowl, combine lime juice, olive oil, minced garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Add the flank or skirt steak, making sure it’s fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to tenderize and infuse the flavors.
- Cook the steak: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Remove the steak from the marinade and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side or until medium-rare. Let the steak rest for 5-10 minutes before dicing into bite-sized pieces.
- Prepare the fries: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Wash and cut russet potatoes into fry shapes. Toss the potato pieces with a light coating of vegetable oil to ensure crispiness.
- Bake the fries: Arrange the potato fries on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
- Add cheese and melt: Remove the fries from the oven and evenly sprinkle shredded Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses over the hot fries. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
- Assemble the dish: Remove cheese-topped fries from the oven. Top generously with the diced carne asada. Garnish with fresh pico de gallo and dollops of guacamole. Add sour cream on the side if desired.
- Serve and enjoy: Serve the carne asada fries immediately while hot, allowing the melting cheese, savory steak, and fresh toppings to create a perfect flavor combination.
Notes
- Marinate steak for longer (up to 4 hours) for even more intense flavor and tenderness.
- For extra crispy fries, soak cut potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes before baking and pat dry thoroughly.
- Use a cast-iron skillet or grill pan if grilling is not available for authentic sear.
- Chipotle or jalapeño can be added to the pico de gallo for a spicier kick.
- Leftover carne asada fries can be stored separately and reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
