Ingredients

Scale

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup salted butter, room temperature (112 g)
  • 1 cup sugar (200 g)
  • 1 egg

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (133 g)
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Add-ins

  • 1 cup chopped apple pieces, peeled and cored (100 g)
  • ½ cup toasted pecan pieces (53 g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350℉ (175℃) to ensure it’s ready when the batter is prepared.
  2. Toast Pecans: In a small pan over medium heat, toast the pecan pieces until fragrant, about 3-5 minutes. Stir frequently to avoid burning. Set aside to cool completely.
  3. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and chop the apples into small chunks, roughly 1/2 inch pieces, to ensure even distribution and bite-size texture in the brownies.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, cream the room temperature butter and sugar together using a hand mixer or stand mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  5. Add Egg: Add the egg to the creamed mixture and beat well until fully incorporated and the batter is smooth.
  6. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon until evenly combined.
  7. Mix Dry into Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined without overmixing to keep the brownies tender.
  8. Add Apples and Pecans: Fold in the chopped apples and toasted pecans gently until evenly distributed. The batter will become sticky and wet due to the apple moisture.
  9. Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the sticky batter into a buttered or parchment-lined 8×8 inch baking dish. Use a spatula to press the batter evenly into the pan.
  10. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30-45 minutes, checking at around 35 minutes. The brownies should be golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted in the center should come out with moist crumbs.
  11. Cool and Serve: Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for about 15 minutes to set. Cut into squares and serve warm or at room temperature. These brownies pair wonderfully with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Using fresh apples adds moisture and sweetness; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well.
  • Toast the pecans carefully to avoid burning, which can cause bitterness.
  • Do not overmix after adding dry ingredients to prevent toughness.
  • Cool the brownies before slicing to maintain clean edges.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with plant-based margarine.
